Some of our clever classmates were able to solve the famous Tangram puzzle today. There are 7 pieces that fit together to form a perfect square. Well done!
Today the "High Touch High Tech" company came to teach the class about matter. He demonstrated and had the children experiment with different kinds of materials and matter. At the end, the students made the non-Newtonian fluid called "Ooblek" (made from cornstarch and water with food colouring in it) and they got to take it home. What a fun day! Thank you to the PAC for paying for this special in-class field trip.
Our class saw so many innovative creations today at the Young Entrepreneur Fair. Slime proved to be very popular again. One of our students has a message for her parents:

News from Division 15 June 2019 Wow! We only have a few school days left this year, and they will be busy! Throwback Day On Monday, June 3rd, our school is having our final spirit day – “Throwback Day”. Students are encouraged to dress like it’s a different era. Dress like a 1950s greaser, a hippie from the 60s, a rad tie dye 80s kid, etc. Everyone will show off their fun outfits at the assembly. Young Entrepreneur Day Grade 6 & 7 students have been writing business plans and creating their own products to sell. On Wednesday, June 5th our class will have a chance to visit the fair and purchase items if they wish. Items will cost between 50 cents and $4. There is no obligation to buy, but if you do want to send some money with your child, please put it in a ziplock back labelled with your child’s name. This is a great opportunity to help out our Big Buddies and see the results of their hard work. Library Books Due All library books are due on Thursday, June 6th. Once all books are returned and fines paid our class will earn freezies! Come on Division 15, we can do it! Matter Workshop On Friday, June 7th we have the “High Touch High Tech” company coming for an in class workshop about Matter (our final Science unit). Thank you to the PAC for their generous donation that paid for this special workshop. Volunteer Appreciation Tea We have been fortunate this year to have many parents help us. If you have volunteered in the classroom, at parties, on field trips, or on special days – Thank you! Dogwood is hosting a special thank you tea for volunteers on Monday, June 10th from 2:00-2:30. More information will be sent home soon. Games Day On Friday, June 14th it will be Games Day. Students are encouraged to dress in their team colour and prepare for a fun day. Games Day will happen rain or shine. Lunch is being provided by the PAC for all students in the school. Please send a healthy snack, water bottle, hat, and put sunscreen on your child. Families are welcome to attend and watch their children play the different games created by our grade 7 leaders. Home Reading Wednesday, June 19th will be the final day for Home Reading. All books should be returned on June 20th. Thank you. Board Game Day This year, we are going to have an afternoon to play board games. If your child would like to bring a board game to play on this day, please make sure you label the game first. Send the game on Monday, June 24th. Movie Morning On Tuesday, June 25th, students are invited to bring a favourite stuffy to school. In the morning, we will be watching a movie with our stuffies and Mrs. Watt’s class. I will let you know what the movie will be once we have chosen it. Spray Park We’ll be going on one last field trip this year. On Wednesday, June 26th, we will walk over to the spray park by Erma Stephenson school from 10:30-12:30 with Mrs. Watt’s class and both of our Big Buddy classes. More information will come home later this month. We will be looking for volunteers to walk with us and one person who can drive there (so we have a car in case of an emergency). This trip does depend on the weather though, so if it’s raining we will not go. The Last Day of School Thursday, June 27th will be the last day for this school year. All leftover school supplies and notebooks will be brought home before this day. We will share some memories of grade one as a class and students will be dismissed at 1:30 with their report card. Students will need their backpack, a snack, and lunch at school just like a regular day. Curriculum Our school super powers for June are Reflection and Self-Compassion. We’ll start by looking back and reflecting on the school year, then we’ll look ahead to the future. Next, we’ll learn “to love what is” and how to treat ourselves like a good friend. In the final week, we’ll do a visualization exercise about creating a loving kindness blanket. In Division 15 we learn about the super powers during Health class on Mondays or Tuesdays (if there is no school on Monday). Please ask your child about what they have learned. In Math, students have been learning about geometry (2D shapes and 3D objects). We will also learn a little about money and graphing. In Language Arts, the students have finished practicing all of the letters in printing. Their final printing assessment has been posted in Freshgrade. They continue to write in their journal. Grade ones are encouraged to write at least 3 sentences on a topic and to begin to use descriptive words. Students are reminded every day to start sentences with a capital letter and end sentences with a period. Guided Reading continues for a couple more weeks. In Science we grew bean seeds, which have now been sent home. We also had some experiment plants: one without water, one without soil, and one without sun. The results were exciting to observe and chart on the Smartboard. Students drew pictures of the results of our experiment and those pictures have been posted on Freshgrade. Our final Science unit is Matter. This is a hands-on unit where students will explore concepts such as solid, liquid, and gas. We will also have the Matter workshop in class. Please continue to check your child’s Freshgrade portfolio for new content. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me. Thank you for your help and support this year! It has been a great year, and I’ve enjoyed working with your wonderful children. Sincerely, Allison Mitchell |
