The sunny weather has arrived! Hopefully there will be more sunny days in May. On that note, please remember to apply sunscreen to your child before sending them to school. Feel free to send a hat with your child, as well, to wear outside.
Crazy Hair Day Our next school spirit day is Crazy Hair Day on this Wednesday, May 1st. How silly, wild, and ridiculous can your child’s hair look? We’re looking forward to finding out! Socks and Shoes As the weather gets warmer, your child may want to wear sandals to school. However, Dogwood has a “no open-toed shoes” policy for everyone’s safety. Also, if you could please send an extra pair of socks to school that your child may keep in their gym bag for P.E. in case they don’t wear socks. Games Day Games Day has been changed to Friday, June 14th. Your child has known their Games Day colour all year, so ask them if you are unsure. Students are encouraged to wear their team colour on June 14th. Games Day is a fun, all-day, school event and happens rain or shine. We’re hoping for shine so that it can be outside! More information about Games Day will be sent home as it becomes available. Student-Led Conferences Please see the attached invitation to our Student-Led Conferences. They will be on My 16th (the early dismissal day) from 1:30-3:45. It is a “drop in” format and we’d love to see a family member come visit for every child. Please R.S.V.P. This will serve as our interim report. Please see a copy of the Student-Led Conference invitation below. Curriculum This month’s school goal is teamwork. In the first week we will talk about cooperation, and students will be tasked to work with their new table group to sing a song. Look for the end result on Freshgrade. In Math, we are finishing our unit on addition and subtraction to 20. Next, we will be doing a short unit on Geometry (shapes). In Language Arts, the students continue to practice their printing, writing in their journals, and their spelling, as well as participating in Guided Reading. Our writing goal this month is to use descriptive words. Please continue to encourage your child to start sentences with a capital letter and end them with a period. In Science, we will be learning about plants. Students will be growing their own bean plant. We will also be doing a plant experiment this month to find out if plants really need water, sun, and soil to live. Mrs. Watt is finishing teaching dance during P.E. In Art, we will continue to experiment with different materials and create imaginative works. I hope this newsletter has better informed you about your child’s classroom. Thank you for your help and support. You’re Invited… To Division 15’s Student-Led Conferences When: Thursday, May 16th from 1:30 – 3:45 What is a Student-Led conference? You and your child are invited into the classroom to spend approximately 15 minutes reviewing your child’s work with them. Your child will lead the conference, show you their work, discuss their progress with you, and demonstrate some of their skills learned this term. Mrs. Mitchell will be available for a brief discussion as well. Why: Through this type of conference, I hope to improve organizational and communication skills in the children, encourage leadership skills, and help each child to further develop a positive self-image. * As this is a special time for you and your child, please make alternative arrangements for siblings wherever possible. Please R.S.V.P. by Friday, May 10th. If you are unable to attend on May 16th, please phone 604-581-8111 or email [email protected] to arrange an alternate day.
