Special helper #10 says, "I liked that we wrote a letter to the Wildlife Rescue Association". Grade 2 and 3 students from Chantrelle Creek came to visit us today to teach us seven different iPad apps. The students loved it! Dogwood Elementary School
News from Division 11 June 2014 Wow! We only have a few school days left this year, and they will be busy! Jump Rope For Heart On Friday, June 6th, Dogwood students will be participating in our 10th annual Jump Rope For Heart. This is a fundraiser to benefit the Heart and Stroke Foundation. During May, students practiced how to skip at school, and we’re pleased to say that everyone in our class knows how to skip. Way to go Div. 11! Parent Appreciation Tea We have been fortunate this year to have many parents help us. If you have volunteered in the classroom, at parties, on field trips, on special days, or even helped your child with their Home Reading – Thank you! Dogwood is hosting a special thank you tea for parents on Wednesday, June 11th in the gym. Our music teacher, Mr. McRae, has taught all of his music students some songs and they will be performing (this includes Division 11). If you haven’t already, please R.S.V.P. on the pink card that was sent home on June 4th. We look forward to seeing you at 12:40 on June 11th in the gym for an afternoon of entertainment. Special Presentation On Friday, June 13th, we will be hosting a special guest. A representative from the Wildlife Rescue Association of BC will be coming to talk to the students about wildlife habits and habitats. We will be using some of our P.A.C. class fund to pay for this special activity. Thank you P.A.C. for the money for this interesting activity. *We just found out that this is a strike day and are trying to reschedule. Home Reading Wednesday, June 18th will be the final day for Home Reading. All books should be returned on June 19th. Thank you. The Last Day of School Thursday, June 26th will be the last day for this school year. All leftover school supplies and notebooks will be brought home before this day. We will share some memories of grade one and two as a class and students will be dismissed at 1:30. Students will need their backpack, a snack, and lunch at school just like a regular day. Curriculum In Math, grade ones are continuing to learn how to show addition and subtraction facts to 20 with manipulatives, pictures, and numbers. We are using mental math strategies, including “doubles” facts (up to 9+9). We are also solving several story problems. Grade twos are learning about two-digit subtraction with regrouping. All students are continuing to learn about measurement as well. In Language Arts, the students are almost finished practicing all of the letters in printing. They continue to write in their journal. Grade ones are encouraged to write at least 5 sentences on a topic while grade twos are encouraged to write a full page on a topic. We continue (daily) to remind students to start sentences with a capital letter and end sentences with a period. Guided Reading continues for a couple more weeks. We have begun our author study. The students are using the ipads to research their author following a template given by Mrs. Mitchell. Presentations will begin on June 16th. In Science we grew bean seeds, which have now been sent home. We also had some experiment plants: one without water, one without soil, and one without sun. The results were exciting to observe and chart on the Smart board. Grade two students learned about the water cycle and filled a small bag with water to make their own mini water cycle. Our favourite water cycle song is on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T05djitkEFI We hope this newsletter has better informed you about your child’s classroom. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us. Thank you for your help and support! It’s been a great year, and we’ve both enjoyed working with the children in this class. Pajama and teddy bear day tomorrow.
